METHODS OF BOREHOLE DRILLING
Borehole drilling methods:
There are few borehole drilling methods but we will base our discussing on two important and most widely used methods of drilling a borehole
1. Rotary Drilling:
This is about the most common method for water borehole drilling. This method uses a rotating drill bit attached to a drill pipe to drill through the earth’s subsurface. This method can be used for deep, shallow and large-diameter boreholes
Drilling fluid, mud or water (along side chemicals) is used to remove cuttings and stabilize the borehole.
2. Down-the-Hole Hammer (DTH) Drilling:
This drilling method Combines rotary and percussion method of drilling. This method is done by using a hammer / drill bit inside the borehole
Unlike the rotary method, this method is more effective for drilling hard rock formations.this method is commonly used for deep water boreholes for both domestic and industrial use
3. The use of manually fabricated tools:
This method is not too common as it is limited to very shallow depth. The depth achieved using this drilling method, usually doesn’t go beyond 30-40feets
The manual method is done using hand drilling equipments.Manual as the name implies rely main on human energy to drive in pipes attached to manual drilling bits
This drilling method works mainly in area with thick overburden that has sufficient water near surface (a good aquifer) within the overburden.Places with loose overburden favours the use of hand drilling method. The method is done with the introduction of water through hoses and pipes to further soften the loose overburden for easier turning with the hand .
